A View from the Wolf’s Eye
(for the Love of an Island)
  by Carolyn C. Peterson

Introduction --   I have a friend who prefaces all stories of her life by saying, “Do you want to know the truth, or the truth as I remember it?”  Mindful of the fact that all my memories are subjective, I offer this memoir, my story of more than thirty-five summers on Isle Royale.  Assisting my husband in wolf-moose research, I fell in love with his study area, which has since served as a summer nursery, home base and launching pad for our sons, and a listening point for my spirit.  Grateful for the blessings of nature, family and Isle Royale visitors, I hope that my experiences will inspire others to seek, enjoy and preserve the remaining wild places on this planet, including the unlimited reservoir that is the human heart.

Dedication-- I dedicate this book to my husband, Rolf, a scientist whose work is an expression of, not a substitute for, his reverence, and to Oren Krumm, whose joy continues to inspire those who knew him.

The most important characters in my story are Rolf, who keeps trying to teach me to be attentive to detail, and our sons Jeremy and Trevor, who continue to renew my faith in the big picture.
