In January 2005, a wolf fell through the ice and died in Siskiwit Bay.  In May 2005, the skeleton washed up on shore.  The skeleton was reported by John and Ann Mahan, well-known Great Lakes photographers.

We recovered the carcass, and they photographed the event.  See the photos by going to their website.

The wolf was a subordinate female from Chippewa Harbor Pack.  It had dispersed from its natal pack to look for a mate.  It had spent some time with a dispersing male in early 2004.  Like most dispersing wolves, it died before ever having a chance to mate.
